The basics are really easy to pick up. It's particularly suited to young children, with its diminutive size, and will teach a number of skills that translate to other instruments, particularly the guitar. To get you started on your journey, here are ten tips that will kick start your ukulele playing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Record your own playing as often as you can. It's difficult to play and listen at the same time. Quite often just noticing what you're doing wrong is enough to fix the problem.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Use your ears. Listen to everything. Work out what you're hearing. Steal anything you like the sound of.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Practice so slowly you can't possibly make a mistake. Once you've got a phrase under your fingers, it's easy to speed up. Once you've got a mistake under your fingers, it's nearly impossible to get rid of it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Learn to read ukulele tab. Tablature is a method of showing how to play melodies on the ukulele as well as chords. It's easy to understand - much easier than standard music notation. There is plenty of ukulele tab available on the net and it's a lot of fun to play. Search for 'how to read ukulele tab' on Google and you'll find some helpful articles.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;5. Once you've decided you enjoy the ukulele, get a nice one. Almost everyone starts of playing on a very cheap ukulele. These ukes are fine for deciding if playing the ukulele is for you. But once you're into it, get yourself a decent quality ukulele. It'll be easier to play, sound better (so you'll be more pleased with the way you sound), and will give you more impetus to practice.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;6. The type of strings you use can make a big different to the sound of your ukulele. The strings you get with your ukulele are likely to be cheap and nasty. It's worth replacing them with higher quality strings such as Worth, Aquila or D'Addario.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;7. Don't hold your ukulele too tightly. The ukulele is small and it's very easy to smother the sound out of it. Don't hold it too tightly or you'll lose a lot of volume and tone. Watch how masters like Jake Shimabukuro and hold the uke.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;8. Listen to lots of ukulele players. The more you listen, the more you'll get a feel for the ukulele and the way it sounds. It will influence how you play subconsciously.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;9. Take the time to tune up properly. Because it's short, it can be quite hard to get the ukulele in tune. But it has to be done. If your ukulele is out of tune, you WILL sound terrible. There are plenty of tools online to help you to do this. My particular favourite is the AP Tuner.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;10. Enjoy yourself. The big appeal of the ukulele is that it is the most fun instrument around. People try to denigrate the ukulele as a toy. I think that's a huge compliment. I will show you with easy ukulele tablature notation how to play the chords. Let us start with the C-major chord!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First of all, we will use the C-tuning in this ukulele lesson. This means that your first string will be tuned to an A, your second string to an E, the third string to C and the fourth string to G.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first string is the string with the highest pitch, that is, the bottom string when you play.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I will use a form of ukulele tab notation that tells you how to put your fingers in order to play the chords. Every number pair tells you which fret to press down and which string to play. Here is the C-major chord:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;C: 04 03 02 31&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These four number pairs indicate where you are to put your fingers on your four strings to strum the C-major chord on your ukulele. 04 means, play the open fourth string. An open string is a string you play without pressing down a fret. 31 means, press down the third fret on the first string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I will put the chord names in bracket before the syllable where you are to change to the new chord. Time to take a look at the lyrics and start to sing!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You will sing the song in the key of C. In this song it means that the song starts with a C. Play your third string, the C string, to find your starting tone.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Time for the first line of lyrics:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Morning has (C)bro(Dm)ken, (D7)like the first (F)mor(C)ning&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As you can see you will need more ukulele chords to sing and play the song. I suggest that you learn the song one line at a time. You can also devout a bit of your practicing time to changing between chords the way they appear in the song. Let's play Tom Dooley!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here you have the lyrics to the first verse:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hang down your head, Tom Dooley&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hang down your head and cry&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hang down your head, Tom Dooley&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Poor boy you're bound to die&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You don't have to know sheet music notation to play. Instead we will use a form of tablature.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tablature is a special form of musical notation that will show you how to place your fingers in order to play a melody on your ukulele. This notation is also called ukulele tab.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On your ukulele you have four strings. The one with the highest pitch is called the first string and is usually tuned to an A.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you play on your ukulele you will have the first strings nearest your feet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Before you start to play Tom Dooley let's take a look at the ukulele tab notation. What does the following tab mean?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;01&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In this type of ukulele tab this means that you play the first open string. An open string is a string you play without pressing down a left hand finger. One more example:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;32&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The numbers indicate that you shall press down the third fret on the second string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now it's time to play the first part of Tom Dooley. Here is the lyrics and corresponding ukulele tab:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hang down your head, Tom Dooley&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;03 03 03 23 12 01 01&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Remember, the first digit tells you which fret to press down and the second which string. Here comes the next ukulele tab:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hang down your head and cry&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;03 03 03 23 12 32&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This type of ukulele tab doesn't tell you the length of the notes but you will probably find that out by yourself as you already know the melody.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's move on!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hang down your head, Tom Dooley&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;03 03 03 23 12 32 32&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can use your right hand thumb to play the notes. What about your left hand?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course you can play all notes with your left hand index finger. However in the long run you will probably find it easier to play melodies with more of your left hand fingers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I suggest that you use your left hand index finger to press down the notes on the first fret, your middle finger for the second fret and your ring finger for the notes on the third fret.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's continue with the last ukulele tab:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Poor boy you're bound to die&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;32 32 01 12 23 12&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This ukulele tab will also work on a guitar as the first three strings are tuned in the same way on a guitar.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Try to memorize the melody by practicing the ukulele tab one line at a time!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Well, now you can play Tom Dooley on your ukulele so now it's time to play for your friends!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you have a friend who owns another ukulele and can play chords you can play the melody together with the following two chords:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;F major: 24 03 12 01&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;C7: 04 03 02 11&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Start with F until you come to the word cry. Here is the first verse:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mary had a little lamb&lt;br /&gt;little lamb, little lamb&lt;br /&gt;Mary had a little lamb&lt;br /&gt;its fleece was white as snow&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thomas Edison used this poem in testing his invention of the phonograph in 1877. It became the first audio recording to be successfully made and played back.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's start playing the first notes! The melodi you now will play will correspond to the text line:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mary had a little lamb&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;0/1 3/2 1/2 3/2 0/1 0/1 0/1&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is my special form of ukulele guitar tab for articles to be sure that they are readable on article sites.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;0/1 means that you play the first string with your right hand thumb without pressing down any left hand finger. It is called to play on an open string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3/2 subsequently means that you press down the third fret on the second string. A more professional approach is to play the notes on the first fret with your first finger and the notes on your third fret with your little finger.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is a little bit tricky at first but as your fingers get used to it it will actually be easier to find the right notes. The chords you will need is F and C7. The ukulele guitar is a fantastic little instrument with many possibilities. You can play chords and melodies on it but a requisite is that your ukulele is in tune. Let's tune up!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The most common ukulele guitar tuning is the standard C tuning.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is of course preferable to use a tuner or piano or tuning fork in ukulele guitar tuning but it is not necessary to tune exactly to the concert pitch if you don't play with others.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can tune the ukulele by ear, using the method outlined below.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The strings on the ukulele guitar are numbered from the highest pitched string. When you hold your ukulele in playing position string number one will be the string nearest your feet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now I will show you some steps in ukulele tuning to get your ukulele in tune.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Tune your first string to an A or a pitch that sounds okey to you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Press down a finger on the fifth fret on the second string. Tune the second string until the pressed down fret will have the same pitch as the first string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Press down a finger on the fourth fret on the third string. Tune the third string until the pressed down fret will have the same pitch as the second string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Press down a finger on the third fret on the second string. Tune the fourth string until it sounds the same as the pitch of your pressed down fret on the second string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We can test if your ukulele is in tune by playing the first part of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first notes you will play are on the third string without pressing down any finger. I will use a form of ukulele guitar tab with numbers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first number indicates the fret. The second number after the slash indicates which string to play:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;0/3 0/3&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This means: Play two notes on the open third string. Tablature is a music notational system that shows you where to put your fingers on your ukulele in order to play melodies and chords.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The most common type of tablature notation or tabs uses lines that represent the strings and numbers on the lines to show which frets to press down.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I will use another type of tab notation that I call number tabs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Why number tabs?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Number tabs work better on article sites and will not be distorted if the fonts are changed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Number tabs makes the information accessible to visually impaired readers using braille.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I will not use lines to represent the strings but instead use numbers for both strings and frets this way:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;fret/string&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This means that the first number will tell you which fret to press down and the number after the slash which string to use. 3/1 for example means: Press down the third fret on the first string!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;0/1 means, play the first string without pressing down a fret! This is called to play an open string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first string is the bottom string when you play the uke the ordinary way.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are the first chord, C-major, that we will use in this song:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;C: 0/4 0/3 0/2 3/1&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In this chord you can see that the only string to press down is the first string but you will play all four strings together.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you play this chord you should strum the strings from the fourth down to the first string with your right hand thumb or your index finger or in some other way.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now we can sing the first line of the song. We will use the Christmas song White Christmas to help us learn some nice ukulele chords.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;White Christmas" is an Irving Berlin song that he wrote in early 1940. It has been sung by many artists but was first sung by Bing Crosby in the 1942 musical Holiday Inn.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In order to show you how to play the chords I will use a special form of tablature notation that I call number tablature. The notes you are to play on your ukulele are notated with two numbers representing the fret and string to play. Here is an example:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3/1&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The number before the slash tells you which fret to press down. The number after the slash which string to play. In other words, press down the third fret on the first string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first string on your ukulele are the one at the bottom when you play.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What fingers should you use to press down the frets?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can try this out for yourself or use the recommendations in brackets after the chords shown below. I will show you how to play Mary Had A Little Lamb on two strings on your ukulele. We will use easy ukulele tab so you don't need to know sheet music.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mary Had A Little Lamb is a popular nursery rhyme. Here is the first verse:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mary had a little lamb&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;little lamb, little lamb&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mary had a little lamb&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;its fleece was white as snow&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thomas Edison used this poem in testing his invention of the phonograph in 1877. It became the first audio recording to be successfully made and played back.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's start playing the first notes! The melodi you now will play will correspond to the text line:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mary had a little lamb&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;0/1 3/2 1/2 3/2 0/1 0/1 0/1&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is my special form of ukulele guitar tab for articles to be sure that they are readable on article sites.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;0/1 means that you play the first string with your right hand thumb without pressing down any left hand finger. It is called to play on an open string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3/2 subsequently means that you press down the third fret on the second string. Now when you understand how to read my ukulele tab notation we will proceed with the next line of lyrics:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;little lamb, little lamb&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3/2 3/2 3/2 0/1 3/0 3/0&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This type of ukulele guitar tab doesn't indicate the length of the notes. I guess you hear that the third and sixth note ought to be a little longer than the rest.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here is the third line of lyrics and the corresponding ukulele tab:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mary had a little lamb&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;0/1 3/2 1/2 3/2 0/1 0/1 0/1&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Identical with the first line as you can see.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I haven't told you anything about which left hand finger to press down on the frets.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can of course use your first finger for all the notes. A more professional approach is to play the notes on the first fret with your first finger and the notes on your third fret with your little finger.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is a little bit tricky at first but as your fingers get used to it it will actually be easier to find the right notes. You don't even have to look at your fingers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's complete the song with the last line:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;it's fleece was white as snow&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;0/1 3/2 3/2 0/1 3/2 0/1&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I would suggest that you learn the melody by heart. The ukulele tab is a little help in the beginning but it's fun to be able to have a repertoire with songs you can play whenever you want.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If your ukulele guitar is tuned with the first string to A the song will be in the key of F. The chords you will need is F and C7. They are easy on ukulele but a little bit harder on guitar.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The F and C chord written with my type of easy ukulele tab will look like this:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;F: 0/1 1/2 0/3 2/4&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;C7: 1/1 0/2 0/3 0/4&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I hope you will find out by yourself where the chords will fit in the melody.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can use this ukulele The ukulele is a fantastic little instrument with many possibilities. You can play chords and melodies on it but a requisite is that your ukulele is in tune. Let's tune up!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The most common ukulele tuning is the standard C tuning.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is of course preferable to use a tuner or piano or tuning fork in ukulele tuning but it is not necessary to tune exactly to the concert pitch if you don't play with others.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can tune the ukulele by ear, using the method outlined below.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The strings on the ukulele is numbered from the highest pitched string. When you hold your ukulele in playing position string number one will be the string nearest your feet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now I will show you some steps in ukulele tuning to get your ukulele in tune.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Tune your first string to an A or a pitch that sounds okey to you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Press down a finger on the fifth fret on the second string. Tune the second string until the pressed down fret will have the same pitch as the first string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. Press down a finger on the fourth fret on the third string. Tune the third string until the pressed down fret will have the same pitch as the second string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;4. Press down a finger on the third fret on the second string. Tune the fourth string until it sounds the same as the pitch of your pressed down fret on the second string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We can test if your ukulele is in tune by playing the first part of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first notes you will play are on the third string without pressing down any finger. I will use a form of ukulele tab with numbers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first number indicates the fret. The second number after the slash indicates which string to play:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;0/3 0/3&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This means: Play two notes on the open third string. Let's play some more ukulele tab:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;0/3 0/3 3/2 3/2 0/1 0/1 3/2&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's explain some of the numbers: 3/2 means press down the third fret on the second string and play the note. 0/1 means that you play the note on the open first string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's play one more part:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1/2 1/2 0/2 0/2 2/3 2/3 0/0&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If this sounds like the beginning of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star you can be quite sure that your ukulele tuning is correct.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We haven't used the fourth string in this melody but you can listen to the two notes 3/2 and 0/4. It is commonly referred to as Ode To Joy. The musical setting is by Beethoven in the fourth and final movement of his Ninth Symphony.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We will now take a look at the ukulele guitar tablature notation we will use.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The string with the highest pitch on the ukulele guitar is usually an A and is called the first string. This is the string nearest your feet when you play. In the ukulele guitar tablature notation we will use a staff with three lines representing the three first strings on your ukulele guitar.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have numbered the lines to help you spot the first string on the tab staff.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. ----------------------------&lt;br /&gt;2. ----------------------------&lt;br /&gt;3. ----------------------------&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's play the first notes of the song using the tablature staff:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. --0--0--1--3--3--1--0--------------0--0--------&lt;br /&gt;2. -----------------------3--1--1--3--------3--3--&lt;br /&gt;3. -----------------------------------------------&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The numbers we will place on this tab staff indicates which fret you are to press down as you play the string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We will not dicuss how to play with you right hand. The most played part of the song is the refrain which we will concentrate on in this ukulele tab lesson.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here is the first line of lyrics and the corresponding ukulele tab:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jingle bells, jingle bells&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. --0--0--0--0--0--0--&lt;br /&gt;2. --------------------&lt;br /&gt;3. --------------------&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The number 0 on line one means that you play the first string with your right hand thumb without pressing down any left hand finger. It is called to play on an open string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The ukulele tab above means that you play six notes on the open first string. This type of ukulele tab doesn't indicate the length of the notes. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, "Happy Birthday to You" is the most popular song in the English language.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here is the most common lyrics. "Peter" is to be replaced by the name of the celebrating person.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Happy birthday to you&lt;br /&gt;Happy birthday to you&lt;br /&gt;Happy birthday dear "Peter"&lt;br /&gt;Happy birthday to you&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We will only use the first three strings on your ukulele so the tab staff will only have three lines representing the first strings. You can play chords on it as you sing but you can even play melodies. With the help of ukulele tab notation you can learn to play Amazing Grace in a few minutes. Let's start!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Amazing Grace is one of the most well-known Christian hymns. The words were written by John Newton. Here are the lyrics to the first verse:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Amazing grace! How sweet the sound&lt;br /&gt;That saved a wretch like me!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I once was lost, but now am found&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Was blind, but now I see&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You don't need to know sheet music notation on your ukulele. Instead we will use a form of notation known as ukulele tab.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The ukulele tab notation I will use is my own form of tabs that are readable on article sites. You will find the more common ukulele tab notation on my own site with ukulele tab and free sheet music.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you hold your ukulele in playing position you will have the first string nearest your feet. It is the string with the highest pitch and it is usually an A.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here comes an example on how to ukulele tab:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;01 11 31 11 01&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first digit in the pair tells you what fret to press down. The second digit what string to play. 01 means that you play the first string without pressing down a left hand finger. In other words you play on the open first string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;11 means that you press down a left hand finger on the first fret on the first string and play. Now you can play the easy ukulele tab above.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's play the first part of Amazing Grace:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Amazing grace! How sweet the sound&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;03 12 01 12 01 32 12 23 03&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;03 means that you play the third open string. Play the notes with your right hand thumb or in some other way you like.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The length of the notes is not indicated with this type of ukulele tab notation. Well, it's a little bit up to you, of course!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, I recommend that you use your first finger for the notes on the first fret, the middle finger for the notes on the second fret and, you guessed right!, the ring finger for the notes on the third fret.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;These fingerings will help you as you play in many ways. With one finger taking care of one fret each you will not have to look at your fingers as much as you will feel your way around on the fretboard better.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Another reason is that you can keep your hand in the same position as you only need to move your fingers and not your left hand. With the help of ukulele tab you can learn to play it in no time. Let's start!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Love Me Tender is a song sung by Elvis Presley, to the tune of Aura Lee, a Civil War song by George R. Poulton. Elvis originally performed it in the movie Love Me Tender.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I will use my own form of ukulele tab to be sure that the tabs are readable on article sites.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can find the more common ukulele tab staff on my site with ukulele tab, guitar tablature and free sheet music.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The string with the highest pitch on the ukulele is usually an A and is called the first string. This will be the bottom string when you hold your ukulele in playing position.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first number indicates the fret. The second number tells you which string to play. Here is the first part of Love Me Tender with ukulele tab:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;03 12 02 12 32 23 32 12 02 23 02 12&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;03 indicates that you play the third string without pressing down a left hand finger. We call this to play on an open string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;12 means that you press down a left hand finger on the first fret on the second string.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Play the notes with your right hand thumb or in some other way you like.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The length of the notes is not indicated with this type of ukulele tab notation. I guess you will find out this by yourself.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's play the next part of the song:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;03 12 02 12 32 23 32 12 02 23 02 12&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A repetition of the first melody as you can see.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What left hand finger should you use when you play? I suggest that you play the notes on the first fret with your first finger, the notes on the second fret with your long finger and the notes on your third fret with your ring finger.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It can be a little bit difficult to play like this at first but don't give up!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When your left hand fingers get used to this way of playing it will actually become easier for you to find the right notes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you get used to this way of playing you don't even have to look at your fingers when you play.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The next part of the melody with ukulele tab looks like this:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;01 01 01 01 01 01 01 01 32 12 32 01&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I guess that you hear that the seventh note should be a little bit longer than the rest.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;01 01 11 01 32 23 32 12 02 23 02 12&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In this last ukulele tab the seventh note should also be a little bit longer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now the melody is complete!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I guess this means that you can play Love Me Tender on your ukulele. Congratulations!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This melody can be played on guitar too with the use of the above ukulele tab notation! We will use tabs so you will not need to know sheet music notation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First you will have to take a look at the way you have tuned your ukulele. Some people don't care how they tune their ukulele as long as the strings are tuned together. It's okay as long as you are not playing together with another instrument.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But, in order to play the chords in C-major we presupposes that the you first string is tuned to an A. If you can find middle C on a piano you can play the notes up to A. C D E F G A. Right, there it is!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We will first take a look at the C-major chord. With the tab notation we will use it will look like this:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;C-major: 0/4 0/3 0/2 3/1&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now you will learn to interpret this notation. The digit before the slash indicates the fret to press down. The digit after the slash shows you which string to play.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3/1 means, press down the third fret on string one. To play the chords to the first line of lyrics you will have to learn one more chord. Here is F-major:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;F-major: 2/4 0/3 1/2 0/1&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With these two chords we can play the first line of lyrics:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A-(C)mazing Grace, how (F)sweet the (C)sound&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The chords to play are written before the syllable in the text where you are to strum it. Another way to notate the chord progression to play will look like this:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;C / / C / / F / / C / /&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Strum once on every chord name and once more on the same chord for every following slash.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For the next line we need a third chord. Here is G7:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;G7: 0/4 2/3 1/2 2/1&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Time for the next line:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That (C)saved a wretch like (G7)me&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;or written like a chord progression:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;C / / C / / G7 / / G7 / /&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We will take the two last lines together as you now know how to read the chords:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I (C)once was lost, but (F)now am (C)found&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Was (C)blind, but (G7)now I (C)see&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And in ordinary chord notation:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;C / / C / / F / / C / /&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;C / / G7 / / C / / C / /&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To make music of the song with ukulele accompaniment it is important to be able to change between chords smoothly. I suggest that you work on the art of changing from one chord to another by choosing for exampel C and F.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Strum once on every chord and change to the next one until your fingers obey your command. To change from C to G7 I suppose that you play the C chord with your left hand ring finger. This instrument was called "braguinha" in Portuguese. In 1879, travelers took a ship from the island of Madeira to Hawaii. Craftsmen who witnessed this instrument being played were fascinated and began producing it for Hawaiians. The instrument was nicknamed "ukulele," which actually means, "jumping flea." It is also called "uke" for short.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ukes are different from guitars in several ways. They are usually very lightweight and easy to carry. Original style ukes are easier to learn to play because they have fewer strings. They are also easier on the fingers. Ukes are, however, limited in the range of notes that can be played. They are great for musicians who want simplicity!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today this instrument is still very popular in Hawaii and is being shipped to music lovers around the world. Let's take a look at the types and styles of ukuleles.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Four Types of Ukuleles&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are four standard types of ukuleles, which are concert, soprano, tenor, and baritone. The most commonly used type is the soprano ukulele. Each type, except the baritone, is tuned using the well-known tune/phrase "my dog has fleas!" This involves hitting the keys G, C, E and then A. The tenor type is one octave down from soprano. The baritone's tuning is accomplished using this order of keys: E, B, G, D.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are also hybrid ukuleles being produced today, such as the banjulele (banjo body), taropatch (eight-stringed instrument) and ukelin. These specialty instruments are usually developed by individuals or specialty musical instrument companies. Some are even highly collectible today.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The soprano uke is the smallest at about 21 inches long. The concert uke is about 23 inches long. The baritone uke is 30 inches long, and the tenor uke is 26 inches long. The baritone and tenor ukes are more similar to regular-sized guitars, only with just four strings.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Styles of Ukuleles&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ukuleles may also come in a variety of styles, colors, and shapes to reflect the personality of the musician. Some examples of style variety are the Bushman ukuleles, which come in styles such as Jenny Soprano, Jenny Pineapple, Jenny Concert, Jenny Tenor, and Jenny Baritone.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A ukulele maker might use a variety of high-quality woods to produce the instruments such as Mahogany to give the instrument a brilliant finish. The shapes of the instrument may vary as well. Some resemble the regular guitar shape while others might be completely oval-shaped, similar to a pineapple shape, or have a piece "cut away" at the neck.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With prices ranging from $169 and up, anyone can own a ukulele. They can be ordered online for music fans that live in areas where the ukulele is not readily available locally. There is also a wide variety of ukulele strings and accessories such as felt picks, tuners, amplifiers, shoulder straps, strap buttons, tuning machines, ukulele humidifiers, and more.
